Fully automated system recovery
Manually recovering a server can be extensive and
error-prone. After repairing hardware, one typically goes
through a series of software installations, including
reinstalling the operating system, hardware configurations,
and system reboots. The process can span many hours for
a single system, and in worse cases, days. Bare Metal
Restore automates tasks, reducing basic server recovery
to a mere two steps: (1) configuration using the Prepare
to Restore wizard; and (2) reboot of the system.
- Eliminates need for Operating System to be present on the disk drives to facilitate recovery; disk configuration is automatically performed
- Unless a custom restoration has been configured, all subsequent processes are handled in the background, transparent to the system administrator
- Leverages VERITAS NetBackup to protect and restore all relevant system files, applications, and data
Accelerated server restores
Manually recovering a server requires multiple steps
to be performed in sequence, regardless of platform.
More steps usually translate into more chances for errors,
which could lead to an inconsistent restore, or worse,
restarting the entire process. By streamlining operations
and reducing system administrator intervention, Bare
Metal Restore can literally wipe hours off of pure system
recovery.
- Automated restoration returns the server to the last incremental backup - data, the operating system, and applications are coherent
- Multiple server restores may initiate in parallel to accomplish mass-recovery operations, even on different platforms
- With less time spent setting up systems and configuring hardware, servers are restored faster and downtime is minimized
One solution for many platforms
With manual server recovery so extensive and exhaustive,
it's no wonder that alternate techniques have been developed
to help automate and simplify processes. Some are distributed
freely as utilities with the operating system. Some
are commercially licensable. For the most part, all
are operating-system specific. One of the major challenges
with such an approach is that techniques cannot be leveraged
across operating systems. Bare Metal Restore addresses
this challenge:
- Provides a single solution for rapid recovery of Windows and UNIX servers
- Using the same basic procedure, one may recover systems running IBM AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Microsoft NT or Microsoft Windows 2000
- Bare Metal Restore's browser-based,
wizard-driven interface delivers centralized configuration,
regardless of platform
